Mary Kelly Bears – Teddy Bear, History, Information
Mary Kelly is a teddy bear artist from Cape Town, South Africa and opened her own shop, Bear Basic shop in Simons Town in 1990, which she runs with her daughter and a close friend. They specialize in making old fashioned teddy bears based on traditional designs. They design and make all their own patterns. Typical Mary Kelly bears are made from a velour cotton upholstery fabric and imported acrylic golden fur pile and sometimes mohair. They’re available in different sizes, have movable joints, sewn through glass eyes, hand embroidered mouths and claws, and felt paw pads and noses.

Hi Mary & Co.
hope you can help. Since visiting S.A. in 1990 we have often visited Simonstown and fell in love with your Teddy Bear shop. We had our first grandchildren, twins Tom and Chloe in 1996 and knew that 5 months later we would be expected another darling grandchild, Timothy, We were very lucky to be in S.A. in 1996 and bought each child a Basic Bear. When our fourth grandchild Matthew was born my sister-in-law, on request sent us a teddy. When our fifth grandchild arrived, Jessica, a friend of mine very kindly popped in whilst on holiday and purchased a beautiful little teddy for us. NOW!! we have the blessing of another darling little grandaughter Emillie, but alas we have no one who can get us a teddy for our Millie!!!
Do you by any chance have a web site or a catalogue from which we can order one of your adorable bears.
We really do hope so.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Sandra Hughes
Dear Teddy Resource team and Sandra Hughes,
Great to see that Bear Basics is mentioned here.
I took over the shop in 1995.
Unfortunately I have recently closed the shop, however I do still make to order and still have some resources for viewing.
Please get in touch with any further queries.
Kind regards,
Sanette
