Wendy Boston Bears – Teddy Bear, History, Information

Wendy Boston bears was started by Wendy and Ken Boston in South Wales in 1945 after World War II. They moved to larger premises at Crickhowell and Abergavenny in 1948 and operated under the name Wendy Boston (Crickhowell) Ltd. They revolutionized bear manufacturing by introducing the first washable bear to Britain in 1954 and also introduced the safe screw in locked plastic eyes which was attached by a rust proof nut behind the plush. These teddy bears proved to be very popular after their launch on BBC television in 1955. By 1964, as Wendy Boston Playsafe Toys Ltd., they were producing over a quarter of UK’s total teddy bear exports. Denys Fisher Toys took over the company in 1968 and closed down operations in 1976. Most of the teddy bears were made of synthetic fibers like nylon but she also produced a line of mohair bears. Most of the Wendy Boston bears are unjointed with undefined feet and often have ears in one piece with the head. This was so they wouldn’t lose an ear when line dried. They come in many colors with short or long pile plush. The label includes instructions to “Wash in “lukewarm suds.” Some specify Persil, a laundry detergent whose maker endorsed Wendy Boston bears.

    Hi There:

I have a nice teddy that I think might be MoHair.?
    The tag says:
    Made in
    Gt. Britain
    by
    Wendy Boston

It is very handsome, and has a pink neck ribbon.

Is there anyway for me to be able to date it for when it was created?
Is there anyway for me to know if it is MoHair or not?

    Thanks
    Tommy

I am trying to find a unjointed pink teddy that my daughter had. she was born in 1964 so it would be about that time. I unfortunately donated the teddy to the hospital my daughter was under at the time. it was about 12″ pale pink exactly as your description says with undefined feet and ears part of the head. Can you help me find one I an send you a photo. I am not sure if it is Wendy boston but it fits your description

can anyone tell me how much they are worth they were made in 1960
limited addition with a red waistcoat

  6. den 21 May, 2013

wendy boston moved to a bungalow alongside the canal at Llangatock, near Crickhowell, on the road out of the village towards the hillside road which leads up around to Black rock eventually. late 60’s probably into the 70’s I think they were producing from there, not just retired or semi retired.
my mum looked after the place for her. I did not know that it was the lady’s real name I thought it was the trade name. they had lots of stock in a big outhouse near the road . Mum is in a home but is still with it enough I shall ask her about her memories.

  12. Sarah 7 Apr, 2014

Sandra in Australia- you may have the bear that my dad won as a child! He won it in a competition where he had to guess the weight (from a store in Melbourne). I have an old picture of the bear if it’s the same one. I’d love to have a chat if it’s the same bear (don’t worry- I’m not looking to buy it!)

Looking for a pink Wendy Boston bear with blue eyes to replace my “Pinky” who vanished from Scotland to Australia in the early 80s. My sis swopped teddies with her friend who emigrated and I didn’t find out till he was gone. He was a lovely short “fur” bear all made in one piece, two if you count front and back, and had label sewn flat onto back of a leg. I’ve seen plenty lookalikes on ebay, usually yellow, white or blue, but I must have another Pinky. I got him when I was born in 1964.

my father bought my brother a huge Wendy Boston teddy with her name on the foot. He bought it home sitting in the passenger seat of his car,it was as big as a person, saying he had bought home a weekend guest!
This was in the late 1950s early 60s what was this bear called?

  16. Jo McDonald 13 Aug, 2014

I have a Wendy Boston bear.. i am in Singapore/Malaysia.

My late sister sent it to me when she was a nurse in UK. I was not allowed to play with the bear.. since it was considered expensive at that time, it was kept in a cupboard. I am just starting to bond with it.. though it looks tattered.. i feel bad that i had not cared for it more… its about 48 years old now.

I have a blue velvet (with white hands and feet) Wendy Boston Rabbit, he was a present for my very first Christmas in 1959 when I was 3 months old. He is my most treasured possession ! I also have a gorgeous honey coloured teddy bear (about 18″ tall) and a smaller white teddy, both early 1960’s Wendy Boston. They all sit together on a chest of drawers in my bedroom and still receive regular cuddles. Nothing could part me from them !

Firstly would love to know exactly how old he is and any other info as there seems to be very little on the net about rabbits particularly.

  26. Wendy 10 Oct, 2015

My WB teddy was regularly washed by mum and re-stuffed after hanging unstuffed on the Hills hoist line by his ears. His name is Teddy Edwards and he is blue, 57 years old and still my best friend. I want to buy a new one for a friends baby. Possible or not?

  27. Paul 18 Dec, 2015

Had my Wendy Boston teddy bear since 1960 when I was a baby in South Wales. In very good condition it still has its label on his foot and I even still have the small Wendy Boston cardboard tag with the price label on it (£4 and 9 shillings !) Guess it`s worth quite a bit more today with inflation but he will stay with me for a while yet…

  28. Lois 22 Dec, 2015

I have my first ever teddy bear, and it is I believe one of the first machine washable Wendy teddy bears. I was given it for my first birthday in 1961. I am expecting my first grandchild in March 2016, and am going to pass it on. I was wondering how much it would be worth. Unfortunately the writing on the label stitched on the leg has faded over the last 54 years. I live in Western Australia.

  29. Varian 30 Dec, 2015

I am fortunated enough to be the proud owner of two Wendy Boston Teddy bears one small looking very much the worst for wear as he is still my companion.he was given to me in 1960 for my first birthday . When old enough to name him I called him Rupert after the cartoon bear featured in the daily express newspaper.
The second one was given to me at Christmas when I was six. She was named Tessie Bear after the character in the Noddy books by Enid Blyton

  35. A Denison 30 May, 2016

I have a Wendy Boston pink small bear with blue eyes. His name is ‘Pinky’. He is sitting with me in my baby photo’s & I was born in 1963. My Nana bought him for me when I was born. I picked up a Cyclops 1960’s pram in near mint condition from a garage sale, the same one I used to push ‘Pinky’ around in when I was two. It’s beautiful to see my grandson pushing him up & down my hallway in the pram.

  37. Michelle 25 Jun, 2016

I have a late 50’s Wendy Boston doll 😍😍 original outfit and ribbons…. But I can find no information on her anywhere!! Dress and napkin and face still in pristine condition…. Just hair and ribbons are a bit worse for wear and that’s just due to age. Any help greatly appreciated 😀😀

  38. jen 19 Jul, 2016

Does anyone know of ‘Wendy’ bears that are 21inches lonh? jen

  39. Jacqueline Harding-Stanway 8 Sep, 2016

Good to see Michelle’s comment about a Wendy Boston doll – I have one as well. She’s not wearing her pale yellow gingham dress or ribbon in her hair any more as I’m afraid I despatched both of them when I had her (a tomboy in those days).
    Otherwise she’s in great condition.
I was given her in 1965 when I was 3. She is one of a very few toys that I did not give away as I got older.
Would love to see pictures of the dolls in production at the factory.
Was so pleased today to find a site archiving the history of the couple who first made the toys and what subsequently happened.
    Thank you.

  40. Merrilyn Goos 15 Oct, 2016

Hello from Merrilyn in Australia. My elderly mother has just told me that my Teddy is a Wendy Boston bear. He was given to me in 1959 when I was 18 months old (I am now 59). I have a photo of myself as a two year old holding Teddy when he still had his pink ribbon. Now his satin label has fallen off, his eyes are now milky and my mother had to restuff him when the family dog decided to play. He is now in the doll and bear hospital having some repairs – how I miss him! Teddy has been everywhere with me, including international travel and long haul flights (not any more, he suffers terribly from jet lag). He loves watching cricket and is very knowledgeable about most things.

  41. Janet 28 Nov, 2016

Hi I have a Wendy Boston panda bear, she was a christening present in 1965, I didn’t really play with her had lots of other bears when little, think my mum wanted to keep her mint! She has lived with me since I left home though and has her own little pram in my bedroom 🙂 which she allows some less distinguished old bears share. I didn’t let my son play with her when he was little either she has never been washed and is almost perfect at 51 just a little loss of sheen to her paws.Janet, England

I had my first big Ted white Wendy boston, my mum paid five pounds almost fifty years ago it cost more but I was desperate and the shop girl felt sorry for me so told my mum it was slightly dirty and so we got him. She never told my dad how much he was. Wrapped in brown paper and seemed as big as me. He know lives across the pond with some other Boston bears. Desperate for the doll my sister had one and threw her out. If anyone knows where I could buy one would be thrilled. I have a squirrel and two pandas. Have been trying to find out what toys she made apart from teddys.
